Viennese logistics students exploring the port of Hamburg

Every year, a group of logistics students from the bfi Vienna University of Applied Sciences take a study trip to the Port of Hamburg. In early October, 35 students visited the Hanseatic city for three days. Alexander Till, Head of the Port of Hamburg Marketing office in Vienna, led the group in his capacity as external lecturer at the bfi University of Applied Sciences.

As part of the excursion, the students got an insight into several companies operating in the Port of Hamburg. The program included visits to SACO Shipping, the Altenwerder container terminal, the Hapag-Lloyd shipping company and the Maritime Museum Hamburg, as well as a tour of the general cargo ship Cap San Diego, which was used in the 1970s on South Atlantic trades.

The excursion to Hamburg is of great importance to the students from Vienna, showing them more about the important relationship between Hamburg and Austria and enabling them to gain practical insights, outside the classroom. The Elbe port is of great importance for Austria and has been taking the leading position in the container segment for years. In 2017, 280,000 TEUs were transported between Austria and Hamburg, of which 98 per cent were on the environmentally friendly railway.
